Reinforcement bar - colors of capacity

1. General

While designing bar reinforcement in FEM-Design, there are different colors shown for longitudinal reinforcement bars in the manual design mode.

Figure 1. Beam reinforcement in manual design mode

In the picture above there are three different colors: light blue (1), green (2) and dark blue (3). The colors have the following meaning:

Light blue: anchoring length – This part of reinforcement bar is not considered in the calculation at all. The anchoring length is for indication purposes only. In case of auto design, the anchoring length will be calculated automatically based on the code requirements. In case of manual design, the anchoring length must be entered by user in the Longitudinal bar dialogue options (6). It is possible for the anchoring length to be inside the element (1) or outside (4).

Green: shear lengthening – According to EN 1992-1-1 9.2.1.3 bending moment diagram should be shifted to consider the additional tensile forces. In order to not modify the moment diagram, FEM-Design reduces the effective (=working) length of reinforcement bars to include this effect. This length is not considered in the calculation either.

Dark blue: "working" length of the reinforcement bars – This is the only length that FEM-Design uses in the calculations. Reinforcement bar is considered to have full capacity from the start of the dark blue region, so there is no linear capacity increase in the bar and the capacity graph looks like the image below.

Figure 2. Rebar capacity is in the dark blue region only
